The Magic Flute

An enchanting fairy-tale quest for love, The Magic Flute offered an evening of magic, mystique and romance, set to some of the most sublime music ever written by Mozart, conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear.
Mozart’s most magical opera was directed and designed by Melly Still (Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Coram Boy, National Theatre) and with lighting by Azusa Ono.
A feast for the senses of opera lovers of all ages, Nevill Holt Festival’s production saw a cast of the UK’s most talented emerging opera singers collaborate with the award-winning Britten Sinfonia, which The Guardian recently described as “one of our most innovative and vital ensembles”.

★★★★ “A Magic Flute with energy and a fizzing score, wacky, colourful costumes, characterful and quirky dancers” The Times

★★★★ “Melly Still’s staging of Mozart’s masterpiece at beautiful Nevill Holt is bristling with ideas… staged with flair” Daily Telegraph

★★★★ “Excellent young conductor Finnegan Downie Dear has luxury casting at his command in the shape of the Britten Sinfonia… Mozart’s score fizzes along and there’s some lovely suave orchestral blends to admire” The Times

★★★★ “The music is firmly steered at well-chosen tempi by Finnegan Downie Dear, and he has the excellent support of the Britten Sinfonia. Most appropriately, the outstanding soloist is the flautist Thomas Hancox, flexible and expressive as he plays standing in the pit.” Daily Telegraph

★★★★ “Nevill Holt’s remarkably innovative Magic Flute was a triumph, setting a high standard for this year’s quite remarkable Festival… a highlight of the season” Seen and Heard International Magazine
